Best Way to Care Your Hair with Herbs

Herbal applications are particularly appropriate for hair care, as is demonstrated by the large number of herbal hair products available commercially. When infusing herbs in water, use either clean rainwater or boiled and then cooled water; this is particularly important if your tap water is heavily chlorinated. For an ‘instant’ herbal shampoo, prepare a herb infusion or decoction, to suit your hair type, and add an equal volume of a baby shampoo. (Herbal shampoos are best used within a few days, so make small quantities at a time – perhaps 1 cup of infusion.) Place in a container, cap securely, and shake to mix. Pour on to wet hair and shampoo as usual.

Rosemary rinse

An excellent general conditioner, traditionally used for brown hair, making it softer, fuller, and more manageable. It can add luster to dull hair and also acts against dandruff and other dry scalp problems. Thyme and sage are also good general conditioners for darker hair. They can be substituted for rosemary in this recipe.

Method – Pick a handful of rosemary and rub it between your hands for 10 seconds or so to help release the oils in the leaves and petals. Put the rosemary in a jug, pour on 450 ml (1 pint) of boiling water, and allow it to cool. The liquid will be pale green. Or, if you want a stronger concentration, make a decoction by simmering the rosemary in water for 10 minutes. The water will then turn a rich reddish colour. This decocotion is frequently recommended by herbalists as a scalp stimulant.

Chamomile rinse

The traditional natural enhancing rinse to bring out the highlights in blond hair. Calendula flowers can also be added.

Method – Make an infusion by steeping a handful of chamomile flowers in 450 ml (1 pint) of water for 1 5 minutes. Strain and allow to cool, then use as a conditioning hair rinse. Leave on the hair for 12 minutes or so, and rinse away with warm soft water.
