Best Way to Choose Different Kinds of Equipments for Women Golfers

There is a wide range of equipment available. It doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should be chosen with suitability for your game in mind.

Gloves – Most professional golfers wear a glove on their left hand – it helps to ensure a good, consistent grip. It should feel much tighter than a normal fashion glove, fitting well on your fingers and thumb. When trying on a glove, push it down berween your fingers and make sure that the Velcro fastening pulls across the back of your hand.

Some women golfers also like to wear a right hand glove. This is more to protect your hands than to help your grip. If you only wear a right hand glove in the winter, remember that the addition of a second glove can change the way you hold the club. In effect it makes the grip of the club thicker and harder to unite your hands.

Leather gloves tend to be more expensive and usually don’t wear as well, particularly if the weather is hot and your hands perspire. Synthetic, all-weather gloves come in a wider range of colours and are usually washable. If you wash them, do remember to do up the Velcro first!

In cold weather it is often better to use sheepskin mittens over your golf gloves and remove them for each shot. Playing in winter gloves can again make your grip feel awkward.

Golf balls – The golf ball used by most men professionals is unsuitable for most women club golfers, find a make of golf ball you like and stick with it.

There are many makes, some with soft covets and some with harder covers. Soft-coveted golf balls tend to produce more backspin, more sidespin and tend to lose distance. Choose a ball with a tough cover, but an 80 or 90 compression. Too hard a ball is often difficult for high handicap women golfers to use. On a 9 metre (10 yard) putt a soft ball, as used by most professionals, can run up to a metre (1 yard) shorter than one more suited to amateur golfers.

Tees – Most professional golfers use wooden tees, but it is better for most club golfers to use set-height, ‘castle’ tees. The advantage of these is that they encourage you to tee the ball to the correct height each time. They are also easier to use when the ground is hard in the summer, or in winter frost.

Castle tees come in a range of lengths and are usually colour coded — white being the highest and orange the lowest.

  • The white tee is suitable for a deep-faced driver.
  • The yellow tee is more suited for a shallower driver or a deep-faced 3 wood.
  • The blue tee is ideal tot a fairway wood or long iron from the tee.
  • The red or orange tees are for use on par 3s with your other irons.

Shoes – The most comfortable golf shoes have leather uppers, which breathe well, but rubber soles that are flexible. Whether or not you have shoes with metal spikes, soft spikes or a built-in rubber sole, ensure that the sole is sufficiently flexible. If the sole is stiff-usually leather – the shoe may not bend and may finish up rubbing your heels.

Shoes can affect your balance. A shoe with a small heel will push your weight slightly on to the balls of your feet. A shoe with no heel at all will push your weight on to your heels. It is important to find the type that suits you best. In wet weather you should have waterproof leather or synthetic waterproof shoes. As rain can creep in through the laces, a shoe with a flap is more likely to keep your feet dry. Novices should note that training shoes (trainers) are not acceptable at most clubs.

Golf bags – A beginner usually needs to have a bag which you can use on a trolley and can also carry. It should have a good strap, which is adjustable to allow you to balance it properly. If you use clubs with graphite shafts, ensure that the top of the bag has a soft lining and is graphite friendly. Make sure the bag has a hood that can be fitted easily in wet weather to keep the clubs dry, but allow you quick access. Some bags have dividing tubes, designed to keep the clubs from damaging each other’s grips.

The bag you choose should have a section for carrying an umbrella, hooking on a towel and keeping your car keys and valuables safe.

If you carry a bag, try one with a double strap, which is easier on your back and shoulders. As a beginner, learn to carry it correctly — over your left shoulder, not upright, but across your back. Push your left elbow down on the heads of the clubs until the bag lies across the small of your back and feels well balanced.
