The colors in a room influence the light frequencies present in it. These light frequencies pass through your outer chi energy field and, as they do this, can change your mood. You can, therefore, choose colors to help you feel the way you want.

At the same time, each direction within your home – north, south, east and west – has a color associated with it. Using this color in the appropriate direction will help strengthen the chi energy there. For example, white is associated with the north-east, so putting some white flowers in this part of your home will strengthen the north-eastern energy, which, in turn, will help you feel more motivated, clear-minded and decisive.

Generally bright, strong, noticeable colors are more yang and pale, subtle, pastel colors more yin. A room with lots of yang colors will have a more exciting, dramatic and vibrant atmosphere. Yin colors help create a peaceful, relaxing and gentle atmosphere.

Using the principles of the five elements, you can substitute one color with another color of the same element. For example, matt-black in the south-west can be substituted with the other soil chi energy colors which are yellow and white. This is helpful if you do not feel comfortable with the color associated with a particular direction. North and south do not have alternative colors as their element only applies to one direction.

In addition, it is possible to use a color from the preceding, supporting element or the following, calming element in the five element circle. This brings a greater range of colors to your palette. Use the supporting colors to make it more vibrant and the calming colors to make it more restful.

Think carefully

Consider the strength of the color and make sure that it balances with the area that it will cover. A small area of a bright color, such as red, will be more noticeable than a large area of, say, pale blue. So it follows that a bright red window frame in a room with pale colors will be a dominant feature.
