Just as the sun’s movement through the sky alters our individual flow of chi energy, the sun will also influence the flow of chi energy throughout your home.

As the sun rises, the eastern and southern parts of your home will be vitalized by its energy. The sun’s movement from morning to midday is more yang, so every day the eastern and southern parts of your home will be energized by a more yang chi energy. In the southern hemisphere this will be the eastern to northern parts. After midday, as the sun descends, the western to northern parts of your home will be energized by more yin chi energy. In the southern hemisphere this will be the western to southern parts.

The sunny side of your home is better suited to activities that require you to be more yang and the shady side will help you with activities that require you to be more yin. If you think that you are already too yin or yang then spending more time in a place that has the opposite type of chi energy will help you to feel more balanced. For example, if you have difficulty in relaxing, you can assume that you are too yang. To feel more balanced you should spend more time in the yin side of your home and, by sleeping there, you will take in more peaceful yin chi energy.

If you feel low you are too yin. Being active in the sunny side of your home will help you take in more yang chi energy.

To become more yin try the following in your home:

  •  Add soft furnishings, such as comfortable chairs and sofas
  •  Fit full-length curtains made from a natural material, such as cotton or linen
  •  Use rugs or carpets made from natural fibres, such as pure wool
  •  Try large cushions including floor or beanbags
  •  Use tablecloths, cotton napkins and cloths on polished surfaces
  •  Avoid bright colors and use pale or pastel colors instead
  •  Use pale green, blue, cream, pink or black in color schemes
  •  Indirect lighting that is reflected off the wall or ceiling will be softer and more relaxing
  •  Use dimmer switches so that you can soften the lighting
  •  Use candles instead of electric lighting, when appropriate
  •  Table lamps with fabric shades
  •  Keep all doors closed to slow down the flow of chi energy
  •  Play music that helps you relax, so as to fill a room or space with yin sound waves
  •  A slow-moving water feature, such as water trickling over a stone will be very relaxing
  •  Try sleeping with the top of your head pointing to the north, west, south-west or south-east
  •  Curved or wavy patterns and objects help disperse chi energy
  •  Mottled patterns, irregular lines, rag rolling, coarse brushing or plaster finishes are more yin
  •  Soften sharp edges or corners with plants or fabrics
  •  Grow plenty of plants with large, floppy leaves
  •  Arrange your furniture so that you break up any straight lines
  •  Slow down energy in corridors, or where doors are in line, with bushy plants
