Best Way to Push and Pull the Golf Ball

The push is a shot which flies straight out to the right of the target and a pull is one which flies straight left of the target. If you aim correctly it is comparatively difficult to push a ball to the right but extremely easy to turn your body and pull it to the left.

If you push the ball straight to the right or pull it to the left, check your aiming. More women golfers tend to aim off to the right than aim straight – indeed, it is probably the most common fault in the women’s game. If you aim to the right, you may hit odd shots to the right. Alternatively you may find yourself turning your body and dragging the ball away to the left.

The cure to this problem is to practice aiming over a spot. If you either pull or push the shot, hold your followthrough, then return your right foot back to its starting point. Place your club on the ground in front of your shoes. Walk round behind the ball and check your aiming. The line of your toes should be parallel to your shot.

If you push the ball to the right, check your ball position. If the ball is behind centre in the stance your clubhead strikes it with a swing still travelling out to the right. The same can happen if you sway to the left through impact.

It you push the ball to the right, perhaps with a little bend at the end of the flight, you will probably find your hips facing to the right at the end of the swing. Correct this by ensuring that your left leg turns out of the way and that your hips really do face the target in your followthrough.

If you pull the ball to the left you instinctively start aiming to the right. The further right you aim the more you tend to drag the ball round with your shoulders and pull it to the left. Make sure that you finish with a high followthrough and the clubshaft coming directly over your shoulders. If you pull the ball left, you will find your shoulders lacing way left at the end of the followthrough. Feel that the followthrough is on your target.

It is easy to hit to the left – an ‘out-to-in’ swing. It is difficult to hit from the inside with the correct curved path. To produce the correct ‘inside’ attack, the clubhead should feel as though it comes from behind you. Like swinging a tennis racquet, you swing it in a curve.

Practice the exercise hitting through the ball like a hammer and nail. Try to feel a shallow attack, attacking the ball from behind your legs. If you pull the ball to the left, the chances are you also play it too far forward in your stance. Play the hall back towards the middle of the stance and try tor a shallow, inside attack.
