Best Way to Find the Correct Address Position in the Golf Swing

There are several important elements involved in the way you stand to hit the ball, known to golfers as the ‘address position’. You owe it to yourself to get into good habits from the start.

Use a 7 iron. Sit the club squarely on the ground without a ball and hold it lightly with the right hand. Put your feet a comfortable distance apart, say hip width, and bend from your hips, not your waist.

Add your left hand and adjust your right hand to take hold of the club. Your arms should hang reasonably vertically, hands in a direct line-below your chin. It you bend correctly, from the hips, your back should feel fairly flat, though not stiff. Your legs should take up a natural flex. Keep your head up and your chin in, with just a natural and comfortable line from the top of your head down your back.

When you can feel the correct posture without a ball, your next move is to adjust your distance from the ball by moving your feet backward or forward. How far you are away depends on your height – shorter people need to stand further from the ball.

Do not ‘sit and sag’. This is the typical wrong position. It comes from bending or slouching from the waist, rather than bending from the hips. If you bend wrongly, the legs tend to lock or straighten, after which you are likely to bend them excessively. Unless you are very tall, you hardly need to bend the knees at all. The legs should just feel relaxed.

Keep your head up and your chin in, not poking out. Make your neck feel as long as possible. Your eyes should look down your face.

The posture changes slightly depending on the clubs. The driver is the longest and you should naturally find yourself standing taller with it, your weight slightly back on the heels. With a wedge, the shortest club, you will bend over more, with your weight a little more on the balls of the feet.
