Few of us are ever content with our bodies -even supermodels grumble about their bodily blips – yet most of us neglect our bodies by adopting the out-of-sight, out-of-mind attitude, that is until the time comes to cast off our clothes and don our bikinis: only then when we have to reveal our bodies do we realise that it’s too late for miracle diets or anti-cellulite strategies.
Having to face the world with dry, dimpled skin is bad enough, but the thought of svelte Baywatch-style babes in incy wincy bikinis, is enough to make most of us break out in a cold sweat. But before you start loathing the warm weather just because it’s too hot to wear those concealing woolly jumpers and tights, take heart: with a little sloughing and softening you can improve your body in a matter of weeks.
Body Polish
Dead skin cells tend to accumulate on the skin, especially on neglected parts of your body, like your back. If you’ve ever scratched your back and come away with fingernails full of dirt, you’ll know what I mean. Thankfully, the appearance of dry and pasty-looking skin can be improved almost immediately by exfoliating, which is also an effective way to prepare your skin to be more receptive to body lotion.
Exfoliating actions can be performed either on dry skin, using a towel, mitt or loofah or, alternatively, on wet skin whilst showering with one of the dozens of body scrubs available, such as The Body Shop’s Marmalade Scrub or Clarins’ Exfoliating Body Scrub. Massage your exfoliator into damp skin, working in light, circular movements all over your body, paying particular attention to such hard-skin zones as the elbows, knees and soles of feet. And don’t forget your hands, they really benefit from regular exfoliation. Always apply a body lotion afterwards.
Have baby-soft skin
A soft, smooth, silky skin does wonders for your confidence, but if the last time that you slathered on body lotion was after a day’s roasting on the beach, your body is probably crying out – and drying out – for moisture. The skin on our bodies contains fewer sebaceous glands than that of the face, which means that it produces less natural oil. So if you want to avoid dry, crepy skin, it is vital that you moisturise daily.
Bodycare products have now become as sophisticated as those for the face, with many cosmetics companies using the same ‘wonder’ ingredients found in face creams to help to improve the texture of the skin and guard against ageing. These are a few of the most popular body moisturisers, ranging from the inexpensive ones that you’ll find in the supermarket, to the most luxurious designer lotions: Revlon’s Dry Skin Relief, Neutrogena’s Daily Moisture Supply, Bharti Vyas’ Body Lotion, Helena Rubinstein’s Force-C Body Mousse, Vaseline’s Intensive Care Body Lotion and Donna Karan’s Cashmere Body Lotion. For extra-dry or callused areas, try Eve Lom’s TLC, Gatineau’s Vigoceane Moisturising Lotion, Vaseline Petroleum Jelly or Kiehl’s Intensive Moisturiser. In order to lock the maximum amount of moisture into your skin, apply liberal amounts of lotion to damp skin.
