Best Way to Use Aromatherapy Bath to Reduce Stress and Tension
Essential oils extracted from the seeds, leaves, flowers, barks, gums and roots of plants have been used therapeutically since ancient times. Aromatherapy is the modern day rediscovery of these practices. The use of essential oils can have beneficial effects physically and psychologically, and provide the opportunity for some very pleasant relaxation techniques.
The oils may be used in a variety of ways to help reduce stress and tension. Some are particularly suitable for relaxation and will help induce sleep, while others are rejuvenating and uplifting.
Baths arc often associated with lying back and letting the cares of the day slip away. Being immersed in warm water is in itself relaxing and the use of aromatherapy can make a bath even more effective as a relaxation technique. Your choice of oils should take into account whether you want to be relaxed and alert, ready to carry on with the day, or whether you intend to sleep shortly after your bath. Experiment with the oils to discover which combinations you enjoy and find most effective.
After filling your bath, simply add 4 to 12 drops of the oil or combination of oils you have selected and agitate the water to disperse the oil through the bath so that it does not cause irritation to your skin. Or you may like to use a commercial bath lotion or soap that contains suitable essential oils.
To take full advantage of the effects of an aromatherapy bath, it is worth spending a little time in preparation. Make sure you will not be disturbed for 20 to 30 minutes and that you have your thickest, fluffiest towel or a toweling bathrobe ready. A few candles will provide a warm glow of light, and relaxation music will add to the effect.
Ensure you will be comfortable, with a “bath pillow” or rolled towel to support your head, and make the decision that this time is just for you and only for relaxation.
For a relaxing bath before bed
The water should be as hot as is comfortable. This will help your muscles relax and encourage the pores in your skin to open, allowing absorption of the aromatherapy oils. The heat will also vaporize the oils, making inhalation possible. A few oil combination suggestions are:
- Bergdmot 6 drops
- Lavender 3 drops
- Sandalwood 3 drops
- Lemon 6 drops
- Ylang Ylang 3 drops
- Cedarwood 3 drops
- Clary Sage 3 drops
