Best Way to Choose the Best Shades of Make-Up for Your Colouring

Whether you are painted to the hilt, or are the type who’s never quite got to grips with what’s right for you, these make-up superhints will help you to get well acquainted with the lipstick, powder and paint.

Even if it’s just a smidgen of concealer or a swift slick of lip gloss, make-up gives you a polished look and enhances your features. It can make lips fuller, eyes bigger and skin flawless – it’s also handy for camouflaging imperfections. And, if you are in need of a total transformation, make-up can play a part in that, too.

Leading make-up artist Trish McEvoy, who has her own signature range, helps you choose the best shades of make-up for your colouring.

Redheads: ‘Stick with a foundation that has more warmth in it to cancel out some of your natural ruddiness. The blush tones that work best are in the peachy-bronze colour group. For your eyes, use vanilla-cream-coloured eyeshadow accented with terracotta, and a dark brown to line your eyes. Mascara should be dark brown or black. Colour your lips in shades of browns and soft corals.’

Blondes: ‘Foundation that incorporates your skin’s natural undertones into it is best. Choose a blush colour that mimics the naturally flushed colour you get from a brisk walk in the park. Brown or black mascara works best, along with soft and neutral-toned eye colours, preferably soft bieges, taupes and browns. For lips, use satiny brown-pinks or soft-brown tones with a nude lip liner

Brunettes: ‘Find a foundation that can correct some sallowness that might be present in your skin tone; use a warm or neutral shade. The blushes that work best are a mixed palette of bronze and dusty pinks with a touch of coral. Emphasise your eyes with black mascara, and choose eyeshadow in redwood-chestnut and bronze shades to bring j out the natural highlights and tones that already exist in your hair colouring. Lip colour from the red/brown family is most flattering.’
