Lighting is an important factor in creating the atmosphere of a room and different types of light will set the mood of a space.
Although not as popular today, fluorescent strip lights were commonly used in the kitchen. From a feng shui perspective there are two problems associated with using fluorescent lighting. The first is that it gives off a blue light, which makes a room look colder and institutional, and people’s skin tone look pale and unhealthy.
The second problem is that fluorescent lights tend to give off more eletromagnetic fields (EMF). Some people have noticed increased incidences of headaches and loss of concentration when close to this type of lighting.
There is an opportunity to improve the atmosphere in your kitchen by using a range of other types of lighting. Incandescent lighting will generate a warmer orange hue and is suited to general lighting, while halogen lights send out a brighter white light that can be directed to a specific area.
It is best to use a variety of direct and indirect lighting so you can create a softer mood or a more functional arrangement depending on your needs.
Correct lighting in the kitchen
If you have a fluorescent light think about replacing it. Consider what kind of incandescent light you would like in its place. For instance, choose a light that reflects back onto a white ceiling, spreading the light more softly throughout the kitchen. A light with a metal reflector will give a brighter light, although over a smaller area. If you have a table below the light you can use a fitting that allows you to pull the light down to create a more intimate mood.
Look at the areas where you cook and prepare food. Work surfaces, the cooker and the sink will be places that would benefit from direct lighting. Check above these areas to see where you can fix incandescent or halogen spotlights to illuminate these surfaces. Remember not to place these behind you so that you create a shadow in front of you.
Once you have designed your lighting plan arrange for a suitable professional to carry out your instructions.
