Best Way to Create a Secure Feeling with Feng Shui

In feng shui there are four ways that energy surrounds our bodies – in front of us, behind us, to our left and to our right.

‘These positions are symbolized by four animals – the pheonix, the tortoise, the dragon and the tiger. The phoenix rises in front of you while the tortoise protects your back; the dragon and tiger guard your sides. Generally, it is better to sit with your back to a wall so that it is protected by the energy of the tortoise and your front is open to the rising energy of the phoenix. Unfortunately, this is not always possible as you may need to sit with your back to a room, a door or a large window.

The risk of leaving your back exposed is that you will feel less settled and find it harder to relax as chi energy rushes past you. If there is a feature that funnels or directs fast-flowing energy towards you, such as a long corridor or protruding corner, the effect will be worse. One of the remedies for this is to use a screen to protect your back.

Screens may also be used to enclose helpful energy within a specific area or smaller space. For example, you might want to meditate, give someone a massage or rest in a large room. All of these will be easier to do if the energy around you is calm and still.

Positioning screens behind chairs

Look at the places you or your family sit. See if any seats are unprotected at the back by a wall, and if it is possible to protect them with a screen.

There are numerous types of screen – a Japanese-style paper screen (useful if you want to let some light through), a wooden lattice screen, a solid wooden screen or a metal-framed screen with cotton fabric. You can also use tall plants to make a natural screen. Place the screen of your choice behind the chair(s).

Positioning screens in a room

If you are finding it difficult to relax and find solitude in a particular room, consider the possibility of using a screen or plants to enclose part of the room. Once you have set up the screen try to relax there and assess the results.
