Best Way to Create the Autumn Landing Flower Arrangements

For hallways and landings, tall, narrow arrangements are often the most successful, providing a welcoming atmosphere without obstruction. Ideally these arrangements should have a clear outline and interesting textural quality.

Halls and landings, being often narrow and fairly dark, are notoriously difficult to decorate. Because they tend to have a large expanse of wall area, any floral arrangement needs to be striking and fairly large without impinging too much on the traffic that passes through these linking spaces in the house. A small side table or a narrow window shelf are the ideal locations for an arrangement. If your landing is large enough, you can put a small fable against the banisters themselves, as shown here.

Tall narrow arrangements are usually the most successful, and the form should be strong and clear in outline. This predominantly yellow and green arrangement is an autumnal fresh flower arrangement; a simple long-lasting winter alternative would be twisted hazel or willow twigs in a tall vase. In spring, a bowl of tall scented narcissi or twigs of forsythia would work well in this situation, and in summer an armful of lilac. Silk or dried flowers ate always a good choice in these positions, particularly when the daylight levels are very low.

This striking arrangement of large flowers and architectural foliage is best seen against a simple background that does not detract from its dramatic qualities. A plain container is ideal for this kind of display.

This sunflower arrangement gains its strength and simplicity from using large, handsome flowers and clearly defined foliage forms. When making this kind of display, make sure that it is neither too tall not too wide for the container. A triangular shape, whereby the width at the base of the arrangement is roughly equal to the length of each side of the triangle, and the height of the container equal to half the base of the triangle, works best. Don’t choose too narrow a container or the arrangement will look mean.

  • Create a collar round the top of the container by adding the ivy and amaranthus to spill over the edge.  Insert the feathery golden rod at the back to build up the outline and then add the hypericum berries.
  • Add the yellow alstroemeria and then the sunflowers to provide a bright focal point. Add the bulrushes for extra height.
